Migrate the proxy PostgreSQL protocol implementation to published pg-proto 0.1.0 and remove the superseded local protocol stack.

What changed

  • delegate tagged framing, direction-specific decoding, validation, and serialization to pg-proto
  • delegate startup, SSL, cancellation, authentication, and diagnostic message representation to pg-proto
  • pair downstream/upstream protocol state machines while preserving pipelining
  • retain only CipherStash-specific state and message handling for SQL, parameter, metadata, and row rewrites
  • preserve buffering, authentication policy, TLS policy, error factories, metrics, timeouts, and cancellation forwarding
  • reject malformed, oversized, and unknown-tag frames through the pg-proto codecs

Legacy cleanup

Removed the handwritten frontend/backend tag enums, startup codes/messages, authentication wire model, ReadyForQuery and Terminate serializers, frame length/tag parsing, diagnostic serialization, and redundant Parse/Bind wire counts. The cleanup commit removes 1,251 lines while adding 296 lines of typed integration and retained policy.

Verification

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check
  • cargo clippy -p cipherstash-proxy --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • CS_PROMETHEUS__ENABLED unset: 127/127 unit tests pass, plus doc tests
  • focused PostgreSQL protocol and rewrite tests pass
  • live MD5 authentication, simple query, extended Parse/Bind/Execute, invalid Bind, and Sync recovery smoke tests passed before the cleanup; the cleanup preserves those typed paths
  • git diff --check

Full Docker/TLS/COPY/asynchronous-message integration coverage has not yet been run.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The proxy migrates PostgreSQL handling to typed pg-proto messages. It replaces legacy stream and message modules, uses operation-keyed state, adds typed middleware and rewriting, updates TLS and connection setup, and adjusts integration tests and migration documentation.

Operation, portal, and session state use keyed maps. Bind and DataRow rewriting use typed protocol structures and preserve explicit NULL values.
Typed middleware forwarding
packages/cipherstash-proxy/src/postgresql/middleware/*, packages/cipherstash-proxy/src/postgresql/error_handler.rs, packages/cipherstash-proxy/src/postgresql/mod.rs
Frontend and backend middleware intercept typed messages, rewrite queries and responses, flush held rows, update operation state, and return typed diagnostic responses.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 3ebe1

This refactor changes PostgreSQL protocol handling and connection execution, but the current head still carries risks including possible compilation failure, premature termination of idle sessions, reduced encryption parallelism, unbounded prepared-statement state, incomplete client guidance, and TLS readiness being reported before the handshake is validated; these issues should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Update the doc comment to match the new return type and mappings.

Consider replacing the run! and run_client! macros with generic functions.

The macros exist to bridge distinct Server and Client types. Generic functions bounded by the pg-proto server and client traits express the same thing, keep the code visible to the type checker at definition time, and produce clearer compiler errors. Line 87 also moves client_stream inside the macro body, which couples ownership to expansion order.

This is optional and can be deferred.

The variant is named SendError. The repository guideline requires error variant names without the Error suffix. Rename it to Send and update the call sites.

The coding guidelines state: "Define all errors in packages/cipherstash-proxy/src/error.rs, group them by problem domain rather than module structure, use customer-friendly messages with documentation links, and omit the Error suffix from variant names." As per coding guidelines.

Remove this set_statement_session call; it is overwritten a few lines later.

Line 696 calls self.context.close_statement(&message.statement), and close_statement removes the name's entry from statement_sessions. This mapping is therefore discarded, and lines 697-698 write it again.

The comment at lines 692-695 states the required order explicitly: the close must happen before the session is recorded. This earlier call contradicts that instruction and will mislead the next reader.

Build request only on the error paths.

intercept runs for every frontend message. It clones protocol_message twice up front, but request is used only inside the Respond arms. For a Bind message each clone allocates a new Vec of parameter Bytes.

Move the clone into the arms that need it, or keep a single clone and reuse it as the forwarded message.

CodeRabbit non-inline feedback dispositions

I also checked every item from the review summary that GitHub did not expose as an inline reply thread:

  1. Stale error-handler documentation — valid, addressed. The comment now describes pg-proto typed middleware outputs and the current centralized conversion path. Fix: 6f533752
  2. Replace driver macros with generic functions — not valid, dismissed. These macros bridge distinct builder-produced client/server generic types. The relevant pg-proto async traits do not provide the Send/type bounds needed for a materially clearer shared helper; converting this small compile-time adapter would add complex bounds without fixing behavior.
  3. Rename Error::SendError — valid, addressed. Renamed to Error::Send throughout. Fix: 6f533752
  4. Duplicate set_statement_session call — valid, addressed. Removed the early redundant assignment, retaining the one deliberate assignment after the old statement/session is closed. Fix: 6f533752
  5. Eager double clone in frontend interception — valid, addressed. Mapping-disabled traffic now forwards without cloning, and mapped traffic performs only the single clone needed to retain an outbound/request message. Fix: 6f533752

All inline findings have also received an individual validity/disposition reply.

Preserve LocalSet and spawn_local for pg::handler.

TaskTracker::spawn requires a Send + 'static future. The pg-proto 0.10.6 intermediary and middleware futures do not guarantee Send, so this migration can fail to compile. Restore LocalSet and spawn_local until pg-proto provides Send-capable futures.

- Around line 255-256: Update the readiness probe around the “S” response to
complete and validate the TLS handshake, including certificate verification,
before reporting success. Use an existing full-handshake probe or PostgreSQL TLS
client rather than returning immediately based only on the SSLRequest response.
- Line 251: Update the SSL probe’s printf format in the task using POSIX octal
escapes for all request bytes, ensuring it works under system sh/dash;
alternatively, configure the task to use Bash explicitly.
